According to the ILO (International Labour Organization), worldwide 218 children between ages 5 and 17 are in employment. Among them, 152 million are victims of child labor. Almost half of them, 73 million, work in hazardous child labor.Â
This consultation discusses the underlying issues of child labor and steps to mitigate its abuse. Hear from thought leaders on this topic and learn what actions we can take as citizens to address these challenges. A report will be written as a result of this dialogue to share with the United Nations system. #UN75
Luz Rooney is the current Vice President of the United Nations Association of Saint Louis. She has previously served as Treasurer for the organization, as well as Chairperson for its 2017 United Nations Day Celebration. Luz has also served as Co-Chair for the 2019 St. Louis World Day Against Human Trafficking, and Chair for the 2019 Universal Periodic Review (UPR) on Criminal Justice Reform for the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva. Luz is the North Central Region Representative for the National Council, and was selected as a Delegate for the 2020 Commission of the Status of Women (CSW64) at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City.
Caitlin McCurn is the current Deputy Director, Global Programs at UNICEF USA. In her current position, she works in the Global Programs and Field Engagement Department, serving as the focal point for UNICEF child protection and education programs. Prior to joining UNICEF USA, Caitlin worked as the Director of Research and Grants at the Alzheimer’s Association, New York City Chapter. Her professional experience includes work at non-governmental organizations in New York City and abroad. In Kosovo, she served as a transitional justice consultant at the Center for Research and Documentation, supporting an initiative to establish a regional truth commission in the territory of the former Yugoslavia. In Kenya, she worked for Flying Kites, an organization providing vulnerable children with access to high quality education and holistic support.Â
Eman Fahmy is an international business specialist and with over 10 years of professional experience in international business, economic research, project management, and management consulting. She also holds a Master’s in international business with an emphasis on crisis and business continuity management in international operations, and an international business diploma from the University of Cambridge, UK. Eman has worked at multifaceted organizations, both domestically and internationally, in Egypt, Qatar, and the United States. She is recognized and respected for her involvement in various governmental projects and managing diverse teams, as well as creating training, educational portfolios, and international business development plans.
Dr. Shima Rostami is a human rights activist involved in the prevention of human trafficking in the Greater St. Louis area, the state of Missouri, and the United States, as well as international communities. She is a faculty member in the Sociology department at the University of Missouri St. Louis (UMSL), as well as currently serving as the Executive Director of Gateway Human Trafficking (GHT) in St. Louis.Â
Shima has presented in several national and international conferences, and has served on numerous organizations at local, national, and international levels.
